Tennessee Residents Directory is not a government office or records custodian. It cannot retrieve a file, certify a copy, confirm current residence, or change a public roll. Those tasks belong to the office that holds the record. For emergencies call 911. If you are being stalked or harassed, contact local law enforcement.
Where to Ask About Records
Use the custodian that maintains the record in question. Tennessee does not have one office for every county and city file:
- Property or deed: contact the county assessor or Register of Deeds for the county where the parcel sits.
- Vital certificate: use the Tennessee Department of Health Vital Records office or a county health department for an eligible statewide birth or death record.
- Court file: ask the trial-court clerk in the county and court where the case was filed; use the Tennessee courthouse finder to route the request.
- Voter record: contact the local election commission when the state lookup does not return a match or a registration needs correction.
- Older books or indexes: ask the library or archive holding the relevant collection, or check the TSLA county microfilm catalog.

The state office handles certified birth, death, marriage, and divorce records. County health departments can issue statewide-registered birth and death certificates. For copies of property or court records, contact the county office instead. The Tennessee directory of state, county, and city offices and the Public Records Act request guidance provide official routing details.
